Jeni's Splended Ice Creams (Columbus)

Some time ago I had written an extensive post detailing why, in my opinion, Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams makes the best ice cream in the world. So when I got to spend a few days this past summer in Columbus, Ohio, it probably wouldn't surprise anyone that my very first stop was Jeni's Grandview Heights scoop shop, an old haunt of mine.

Jeni's had just introduced its "gravels,"which are basically create-your-own sundaes with Jeni's amazing ice cream flavors paired with sauce, "gravels" (toppings), and accoutrements. Customers are encouraged to give their sundae a unique name, snap a photo, and share on social media.

Gimmicky? Maybe. But oh so much fun!

Truth be told, I had already created six different gravel sundaes in my head in the week leading up to my three-day trip to Columbus! As a result, I went to Jeni's A LOT. In all, I visited six different scoop shops in seven total trips. Here are my creations:

Marty's Market (Strip District)...and more Pgh Taco Truck

The Strip District has been undergoing some exciting new developments lately, and if you're in the neighborhood for some food shopping - because what else would you be doing in the Strip?? - you will find a new wonderful option in Marty's Market.

Since the departure of Right By Nature last year, the corner of 23rd and Smallman Streets had remained vacant for months, which gave this part of the Strip District a somewhat desolate feel, in my opinion. But when Marty's Market, named after owner Regina Koetters' father, took over the space, it has brought along a sense of renewal and vibrancy.  With an open design and transparent garage doors that give the shop plenty of natural lighting and a bright and welcoming atmosphere, Marty's Market is dedicated to providing natural, regionally-sourced, ethical, and organic foods to our community.

But Marty's Market is so much more than just a grocery store.

The front of the shop houses a coffee bar with a sidewalk counter.  Inside, you'll find a cafe serving panini, soups, appetizers, and hot dishes, all prepared in the open kitchen in the back, with cafe seating both inside and out.  Sitting prominently between the cafe and the groceries is a modern food theater where cooking demos, classes, and other events are held.  Indeed, Marty's Market is not just a grocery store, but a community-oriented space where you'll want to hang out.  In addition, Marty's Market is so dedicated to the local community that not only is the food sourced locally as much as possible through connections with nearby farms, but even the decor reflects the restaurants and artists of Pittsburgh, like the light fixtures made with colanders donated by local eateries and the pasty domes featuring handles made by local artists.  Every single detail has been thoughtfully put together.

As if the herbicide-, pesticide-free produce and the shop's own butcher counter featuring antibiotic-, hormone-free meat aren't awesome enough, I was especially impressed by the fact that Marty's Market is the only store I'm aware of in Pittsburgh that stocks two very amazing products: Askinosie chocolate, recently named amongst the best chocolate in America by Bon Appetit Magazine, and ice cream sandwiches from Jeni's Ice Creams (in addition to Jeni's ice cream pints, of course - also considered among the best in the country).  Regina Koetters is a woman after my own heart, as Marty's Market is pretty much the kind of market I would open if I were to be in the business.

I've also had a chance to try out something from Chef Alan's cafe menu: Fresh fiori pasta with perfectly  tender and juicy beef short rib ragout, topped with delicious fresh Burrata cheese and gremolata to round out the dish.

I mentioned earlier about the food theater at Marty's Market.  Several weeks ago, my friend James whose Pgh Taco Truck will be opening shortly hosted the inaugural demo and tasting event at Marty's Market.  Here are some photos of the demo in action.

As always, the tacos were fabulous.  Attending the demo has really given me the opportunity to understand and appreciate the amount of thought and detail that has gone into every seasoning, every cube of meat, and every bite of veggie that make these tacos great.  You can read more about the Pgh Taco Truck in my earlier post here.

Wedding Weekend at TradeWinds Island Grand Resort (St. Pete Beach, FL)

Our wedding took place just under two weeks ago at TradeWinds Island Grand Resort in St. Pete Beach, Florida.  The venue was a no-brainer - it was, afterall, the very place where R. and I met, and there is no other place more special to us than this.

In honor of our wedding, TradeWinds had a little surprise delivered to our suite: Chocolate- and nut-covered strawberries and a bottle of champagne!

We shared the bubbly the next evening with friends
and family.

The weather forecast on our wedding day had been somewhat ominous, predicting a 40% chance of thunderstorms in the late afternoon.  Luckily, the clouds stayed out of the way, and our beach ceremony went off without a hitch!  It was absolutely perfect!  (The rain came later after the outdoor portions of the event had concluded.  Can you say perfect timing??)

Hors d'Oeuvres

While we had our photos taken and the sun set over the Gulf of Mexico, our guests enjoyed an hors d'oeuvres reception by the beach.  Although I did pick out the items from the menu, I didn't actually get to try any of it, let alone have any pictures to show.  The menu included lobster pot pie, petite beef wellington, baked brie with pear and almonds in phyllo, vegetable spring rolls with plum and sriracha dip, cheese and fruit tray, vegetable crudite with spring herb dip, and a sushi display.  I did hear great things about the food, however, especially the sushi, so I was pretty happy with how it went.

Dinner Reception

The dinner reception had six courses, three of which were dessert courses. :)  Dinner started with an Organic Greens salad with Dried Tomatoes, Frizzled Shallots, Goat Cheese Strudel and Red Wine Vinaigrette.

(No, I didn't take photos of the food at my own wedding reception, silly!  These photos were taken during a menu tasting last year.)

The second course was a Shrimp and Lobster Bisque, with cognac and crème fraîche.  Yum!

Guests then had a choice of one of three entrees, all of which I had tried and approved. :)

The first option was Herb Roast Chicken Breast with potato gratin, haricot vert, and chive mustard sauce.

The second option was Wild Salmon with herbed roast potatoes, garden pea puree, baby squash, and blood orange hollandaise sauce.

I just had to use it in our reception menu somehow!

The third option was a vegetarian one, an Open Face Spanakopita with spinach sauté, feta cheese, dried tomatoes, and fennel tarragon hay stack, which for some reason didn't end up being open face during our reception, but I decided not to be a bridezilla about it.

Kids also had the option of getting chicken fingers and French fries instead of the "adult" meals.

The dessert courses were quite epic, if I may say so myself.  First, there was the chocolate fountain with fresh fruits.  I didn't get to try this at our reception, but I've had it before and know how awesome it is, which is why I ordered it.  Guests definitely liked it as well!

A second dessert course consisted of my absolutely favorite ice cream in the world:  Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams from Columbus, Ohio.  I had arranged to have six half-gallons of Salty Caramel shipped to TradeWinds so I could make this happen (and thanks to TradeWinds for their flexibility as well!).  I have to say, this was really a wedding dream come true.

And then there was the four-tiered wedding cake by A Piece of Cake, with three different flavors: Chocolate cake with chocolate caramel salted crunch, pineapple cake with Hawaiian macadamia nut, and vanilla cake with dulce de leche.  Unfortunately, I never got to try the cake before ordering it, as the cake vendor I had originally booked with went out of business just a few months ago and I wasn't going to be in St. Pete Beach again until the week of the wedding, so I basically had to go by my wedding coordinator's suggestion and hope for the best.  Luckily, the cake turned out to be exceptionally moist and tasty, and I heard some great comments from our guests about the cake, too.  We somehow ended up with the top two layers in our suite after the reception so we ate a lot of cake the next day!

Gift Bags from Pittsburgh

As I got more into planning this wedding, I really wanted to bring my new home Pittsburgh into it somehow. We had already decided that we would plant trees in honor of our guests as a wedding favor, but since we also had a few games planned for the reception, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to feature Pittsburgh in the prizes.

I had already talked about getting teabag favors from Tupelo Honey Teas in a previous post - these were part of a gift bag that also featured coffee beans from Coffee Buddha, our favorite coffee shop in Pittsburgh, whose owner helped me grind and package the Black & Gold house blend coffee beans into little magnetic spice containers I found at IKEA.

A second gift bag featured handmade soy candles and soaps from Scentral Station in Southside and prepackaged coffee beans from Brown Dog Java, which occupies a cute corner booth inside the Pittsburgh Public Market on weekends.

We had something special from Pittsburgh for the kids, too: Sarris Candies. :)

The Weekend

We had stayed at TradeWinds for a few days, of course, so I did a lot of eating inside the resort that weekend.  My absolute favorite of the four eateries at TradeWinds Island Grand is the Flying Bridge.  It's a casual, breezy open-air bar by the beach serving good food with decent prices and even better drinks.  The service is also top-notch.  The day before my wedding, I had to rush off to an appointment and only had 20 minutes to eat, so I asked our server, Linda, for a recommendation.  She suggested the Vegetarian Wrap, which she also expedited for me.  And yes, I made it out there in 20 minutes. :)

On the day of our wedding, I decided to grab a delicious Crabcake Sandwich for lunch.  Linda was our server again, and when she found out I was getting married that day, she brought out a drink for me.  How sweet. :)

On our last night at TradeWinds, we met up with friends a family at the Flying Bridge where I got some tasty Fish Tacos.

I also had the Sunday Brunch buffet offered at the more upscale Palm Court.  It was so popular that the indoor seating was full, but I preferred sitting outside anyway for the sake of better photos. :)  There was so much food I didn't get to try even half of it, and what I did have was amazing!  How's that for pampering yourself the day after your wedding? ;)

It was a weekend to remember, and certainly some of the happiest days of my life.  I feel like the luckiest girl in the world. :)

Jeni's Spendid Ice Creams' Macaroons

Anyone who knows me knows I love Jeni's Spendid Ice Creams from Columbus, Ohio.  Some have even called me "fanatical" to my face.  Thus, it is only fitting that I devote some blog space to my beloved Jeni's.

Growing up, I have always loved ice cream, but I had the fortune of living in Columbus when Jeni Britton Bauer opened her first Jeni's shop inside the North Market in 2002.  I forget now how I came to discover this little gem, but I was immediately drawn to its unique and daring flavors.  Some of my favorites include the Thai Chili (now known as Bangkok Peanut), with peanut butter, honey, toasted coconut, and cayenne pepper; the Salty Caramel (need I say more?) and Coco Curry Cocoa (since discontinued), which was a chocolate-based ice cream with curry and coconut.  Where else can you get flavors like that??  Another thing I love about Jeni's is that a number of its flavors rotate based on the season.  Some of my summer favorites include Backyard Mint and Sweet Corn with Black Raspberries, while every winter I stock up on Dark Chocolate Peppermint.  Jeni is also constantly creating new flavors - like the relatively newer additions Askinosie Dark Milk Chocolate, Brambleberry Crisp, and Brown Butter Almond Brittle that I've become hooked on - so there is never a lack of novelty.

Thanks to Jeni's, I have become a true ice cream snob.  I scoff at other brands of ice cream.  Ben & Jerry and Haagen Daaz are a waste of money and calories in my opinion.  Though I'm always open-minded and willing to try "local favorites" that people have recommended - like Gifford's and Moorenko's in DC and Dave & Andy's and Oh Yeah in Pittsburgh - I have never been satisfied.

So what is it about Jeni's that warrants its spot on Bon Appetit magazine's list of Top 10 ice cream in the country?  In addition to its creative flavors, Jeni's ice cream is very creamy - creamier than other brands.  I have begun to notice that other ice cream brands are just too watery or too soft.  Also, equally important is the fact that Jeni's uses fresh and natural ingredients.  The cream comes in its freshest form straight from Snowville Creamery, a farm located just two hours away.  Many other seasonal ingredients are also sourced locally.  The ingredients list contains nothing you can't pronounce so the ice cream tastes exactly how it should taste.  Pistachio and Honey tastes like real pistachios and honey, and Backyard Mint tastes like fresh mint from the farmer's market - and no icky green food coloring either.

When you combine high quality ingredients and exotic flavors in pleasantly surprising combinations, you have a winning concept that has gone from one little stand inside the North Market to (as of this writing) eight additional shops in Ohio and one just about to open next week in Nashville, Tennessee, in just a few short years.  In addition, in the past couple of years Jeni's has begun to partner with local businesses spanning 31 states across the country to sell pints of their goodies.  In Pittsburgh, you can find pints of Jeni's at Whole Foods in East Liberty and McGinnis Sisters in Adams Township (that location only), though I'm still holding out hope that Jeni's might someday decide to open up a standalone shop in Pittsburgh.  Nothing beats being able to sample the different flavors and having many more options than what Whole Foods and McGinnis Sisters happen to stock.  This is why I still order most of my Jeni's ice cream online and have it shipped to my door, packed in dry ice.

One Jeni's product you can't get at one of their retail partners is their macaroon ice cream sandwiches: Jeni's ice cream sandwiched between two soft, chewy, and flavorful almond-based macaroon cookies.  For the longest time, you could only get these macaroons at Jeni's shops in Columbus.  I remember once calling the shipping department and asking Tom Bauer (Jeni's brother-in-law and business partner) if they can ship the macaroons, but the response was a "sorry, we can't."  He said they didn't have a way to ship the macaroons that maintains their texture.  That was a few years ago.  Fast forward to around March of this year, and the ice cream gods finally answered my prayers - Jeni's began offering macaroons for mail order!

Of course, it took me no time to place my first macaroon order, which came in a collection of four different flavors Jeni called "Bakeshop."  They didn't last long in my freezer.

Clockwise from bottom: Cashew Banana Curry, Orchid

I was particularly delighted to see the Cashew Curry Banana Macaroon in the collection as I have been craving it since the last time I had something similar (only without the cashew) back in 2007 or 2008, during a visit to Columbus.  It was the main reason I had called Jeni's asking about getting the macaroons shipped.  I absolutely love the combination of curry and banana together!

Jeni's Cashew Banana Curry Macaroon

Since Jeni's started making the macaroons available for mail order, the season has changed and so has the macaroon collection.  The banana ice cream is no longer available, now replaced by the more seasonal strawberry.  I ordered the Macaroon 4-pack along with four additional pints of ice cream, though I will focus on the macaroons in this post.  Jeni's ships its products in these cube-ish insulated boxes lined with a thick layer of dry ice.  The ice cream pints are rock solid and would actually need to "thaw" a bit in the freezer before you can enjoy it.  The macaroons come in an additional box which presumably is Jeni's secret to avoiding overfreezing the macaroon cookies:

The current iteration of Jeni's macaroon collection, from top to bottom, is as follows:  Salty Caramel with Smoked Almonds Macaroon, Strawberry Buttermilk Macaroon, Pistachio Macaroon, and Orchid Vanilla Macaroon.

Another shot of all four flavors:

And now, let me now introduce the four flavors individually.  The Pistachio Macaroon is made with a rich Pistachio and Honey ice cream.  If you like pistachios, you will love this ice cream, and you will definitely love this macaroon!  And because Jeni's doesn't use artificial coloring, the moss-greenness of the macaroons are achieved by using Matcha green tea powder and turmeric!

Orchid Vanilla Macaroon is an interesting one, with a dollop of black currant jam atop Ugandan Vanilla Bean ice cream, adding a bit of fruity tartness to this macaroon.  Purple coloring made possible by beet powder, black carrot powder, and beta-carotene powder.

The Strawberry Buttermilk Macaroon is the new addition to the macaroon collection, with their very delicious Strawberry Buttermilk ice cream that's only available in the summer months when strawberries are in season.  The pink coloring comes from red beet powder and beta-carotene.

I saved the best for last.  My favorite flavor of the collection is the Salty Caramel with Smoked Almonds Macaroon.  The Salty Caramel ice cream is one of Jeni's most popular flavors, for good reason, and it is one of my all-time favorites as well.  This macaroon also features chopped smoked almonds and it is soooo delicious!

Don't tell R. I ate two of these in a single sitting! (I'm joking.  He reads my blog so I just spilled my own "secret.")  I thought I was only going to have one and next thing I know, I was standing in front of the freezer, debating which flavor to devour next.  These things are so damn addictive I'd be amazed if they last through the weekend!  But of course, I do have grand plans of making Jeni's ice cream at home this weekend, so these macaroons might have to compete against homemade Jeni's for my affection.  (Yeah right, who am I kidding??)

Jeni's, Columbus is so lucky to have you, and I am so lucky to have the internet and UPS!
