Birthday Fiesta Catered by "Salsa Man"

We ended the busy month of January with my birthday, and my preferred way to celebrate is with friends over good food. In the past, this has typically involved going out to a favorite restaurant. This year, I decided to try something a little different: a house party catered by none other than the "Salsa Man," Arturo Vizzuett, whose fresh homemade salsas are simply the best.

The plans actually sort of fell into place by accident. Arturo had been talking about cooking for us for a long time, and it was brought up again during one of my visits last fall to his salsa stand in the Strip District. Sundays are best for him since it does not conflict with salsa making or vending, but Sundays during football season is always a little dicey...except on the day of the Pro Bowl, of course. As luck would have it, the Pro Bowl was going to take place on the Sunday right before my birthday, and so it was decided right then and there that Arturo would cater a birthday party for me.

On the day of the party, Arturo prepared four traditional Mexican entrées and four side dishes (photos below), each rich, delicious, and flavorful. I think everyone had a different favorite, but mine were the tender pork shoulder, beef tips, zucchini and corn medley, and potato pancakes.

As if Arturo's homecooked Mexican fare wasn't enough, my truly awesome husband surprised me by picking up some pastries and a birthday cake from the famous Oakmont Bakery! To be honest, I can't even remember the last time I had a birthday cake.

A birthday celebration with great food and great friends - what more can a girl ask for? ;)

Wedding Weekend at TradeWinds Island Grand Resort (St. Pete Beach, FL)

Our wedding took place just under two weeks ago at TradeWinds Island Grand Resort in St. Pete Beach, Florida.  The venue was a no-brainer - it was, afterall, the very place where R. and I met, and there is no other place more special to us than this.

In honor of our wedding, TradeWinds had a little surprise delivered to our suite: Chocolate- and nut-covered strawberries and a bottle of champagne!

We shared the bubbly the next evening with friends
and family.

The weather forecast on our wedding day had been somewhat ominous, predicting a 40% chance of thunderstorms in the late afternoon.  Luckily, the clouds stayed out of the way, and our beach ceremony went off without a hitch!  It was absolutely perfect!  (The rain came later after the outdoor portions of the event had concluded.  Can you say perfect timing??)

Hors d'Oeuvres

While we had our photos taken and the sun set over the Gulf of Mexico, our guests enjoyed an hors d'oeuvres reception by the beach.  Although I did pick out the items from the menu, I didn't actually get to try any of it, let alone have any pictures to show.  The menu included lobster pot pie, petite beef wellington, baked brie with pear and almonds in phyllo, vegetable spring rolls with plum and sriracha dip, cheese and fruit tray, vegetable crudite with spring herb dip, and a sushi display.  I did hear great things about the food, however, especially the sushi, so I was pretty happy with how it went.

Dinner Reception

The dinner reception had six courses, three of which were dessert courses. :)  Dinner started with an Organic Greens salad with Dried Tomatoes, Frizzled Shallots, Goat Cheese Strudel and Red Wine Vinaigrette.

(No, I didn't take photos of the food at my own wedding reception, silly!  These photos were taken during a menu tasting last year.)

The second course was a Shrimp and Lobster Bisque, with cognac and crème fraîche.  Yum!

Guests then had a choice of one of three entrees, all of which I had tried and approved. :)

The first option was Herb Roast Chicken Breast with potato gratin, haricot vert, and chive mustard sauce.

The second option was Wild Salmon with herbed roast potatoes, garden pea puree, baby squash, and blood orange hollandaise sauce.

I just had to use it in our reception menu somehow!

The third option was a vegetarian one, an Open Face Spanakopita with spinach sauté, feta cheese, dried tomatoes, and fennel tarragon hay stack, which for some reason didn't end up being open face during our reception, but I decided not to be a bridezilla about it.

Kids also had the option of getting chicken fingers and French fries instead of the "adult" meals.

The dessert courses were quite epic, if I may say so myself.  First, there was the chocolate fountain with fresh fruits.  I didn't get to try this at our reception, but I've had it before and know how awesome it is, which is why I ordered it.  Guests definitely liked it as well!

A second dessert course consisted of my absolutely favorite ice cream in the world:  Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams from Columbus, Ohio.  I had arranged to have six half-gallons of Salty Caramel shipped to TradeWinds so I could make this happen (and thanks to TradeWinds for their flexibility as well!).  I have to say, this was really a wedding dream come true.

And then there was the four-tiered wedding cake by A Piece of Cake, with three different flavors: Chocolate cake with chocolate caramel salted crunch, pineapple cake with Hawaiian macadamia nut, and vanilla cake with dulce de leche.  Unfortunately, I never got to try the cake before ordering it, as the cake vendor I had originally booked with went out of business just a few months ago and I wasn't going to be in St. Pete Beach again until the week of the wedding, so I basically had to go by my wedding coordinator's suggestion and hope for the best.  Luckily, the cake turned out to be exceptionally moist and tasty, and I heard some great comments from our guests about the cake, too.  We somehow ended up with the top two layers in our suite after the reception so we ate a lot of cake the next day!

Gift Bags from Pittsburgh

As I got more into planning this wedding, I really wanted to bring my new home Pittsburgh into it somehow. We had already decided that we would plant trees in honor of our guests as a wedding favor, but since we also had a few games planned for the reception, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to feature Pittsburgh in the prizes.

I had already talked about getting teabag favors from Tupelo Honey Teas in a previous post - these were part of a gift bag that also featured coffee beans from Coffee Buddha, our favorite coffee shop in Pittsburgh, whose owner helped me grind and package the Black & Gold house blend coffee beans into little magnetic spice containers I found at IKEA.

A second gift bag featured handmade soy candles and soaps from Scentral Station in Southside and prepackaged coffee beans from Brown Dog Java, which occupies a cute corner booth inside the Pittsburgh Public Market on weekends.

We had something special from Pittsburgh for the kids, too: Sarris Candies. :)

The Weekend

We had stayed at TradeWinds for a few days, of course, so I did a lot of eating inside the resort that weekend.  My absolute favorite of the four eateries at TradeWinds Island Grand is the Flying Bridge.  It's a casual, breezy open-air bar by the beach serving good food with decent prices and even better drinks.  The service is also top-notch.  The day before my wedding, I had to rush off to an appointment and only had 20 minutes to eat, so I asked our server, Linda, for a recommendation.  She suggested the Vegetarian Wrap, which she also expedited for me.  And yes, I made it out there in 20 minutes. :)

On the day of our wedding, I decided to grab a delicious Crabcake Sandwich for lunch.  Linda was our server again, and when she found out I was getting married that day, she brought out a drink for me.  How sweet. :)

On our last night at TradeWinds, we met up with friends a family at the Flying Bridge where I got some tasty Fish Tacos.

I also had the Sunday Brunch buffet offered at the more upscale Palm Court.  It was so popular that the indoor seating was full, but I preferred sitting outside anyway for the sake of better photos. :)  There was so much food I didn't get to try even half of it, and what I did have was amazing!  How's that for pampering yourself the day after your wedding? ;)

It was a weekend to remember, and certainly some of the happiest days of my life.  I feel like the luckiest girl in the world. :)

Tupelo Honey Teas

I happened to discover Tupelo Honey Teas at the Pittsburgh Public Market the first Saturday in April.  I had heard of Tupleo Honey Teas before, but by the time I became a frequent visitor at the Market, it no longer had a booth there.  (Currently, Tupelo Honey Teas is back at the Market on the first Saturdays of each month until September, and is always available online.)  I love tea, so the two or so dozen varieties of tea definitely caught my attention!

I tried the Black and Gold tea that owner Danielle Spinola brewed and brought with her that day - a special blend dedicated to our Steelers.  It is Danielle's own creation by blending black tea with ginger and cinnamon, and it is great!  At that time, I also happened to be shopping for favor of sorts for my wedding that would feature Pittsburgh (more on that in a later post), and thought Tupelo Honey Teas' Black and Gold teabags would be just perfect!  Danielle teamed up with local artist Leatrice Krivyanski (of KreativLea) who made these cute favor boxes for the teabags.  I asked for black and gold, of course, but these can be made in any color.

Danielle can also make custom labels for the favors.  My main goal was to feature local small businesses in Pittsburgh, so I had asked Danielle to include a little blurb about her company, which you can just barely see in the photo above, taped to the inside flap of the favor box.

Perfect!

Dinner with Friends: Burgh Gourmand Cooks Manfredi with Lobster Tail and Calabrese Salame

Last Saturday, Burgh GourmandSeñorita Cibulka, and I went food shopping in the Strip District and then  cooked dinner at home.  Well...BG did all the cooking; I was responsible for supplying two bottles of wine and Jeni's ice cream.  I thought I'd share some photos from our meal.

BG started with the veggies, roasting some red peppers directly on my stovetop.  Can't say I've ever done that before.  Luckily, my house didn't burn down...

The peppers were then chopped and cooked along with some zucchini and yellow squash.

For the main course, BG had picked up some Pasta Setaro brand manfredi pasta from the Pennsylvania Macaroni Company.  Pasta Setaro is imported from Torre Annunziata in Napoli, Italy, The manfredi pasta is about a foot long and looks like ribbons or the edges of lasagna, and is very high-quality.  I think it was about 10-12 minutes to al dente.

BG also got us some lobster tails from Wholey's.  They came from Canada, just like me. ;)

He cooked the lobster in garlic-infused olive oil and butter.  To infuse the olive oil with garlic, first crush several cloves of garlic and cook in olive oil until fragrant.  Then, remove the garlic cloves.

Then, chopped Calabrese Salame were added:

Finally, he tossed everything together, topped it with some shaved parmesan cheese and voila!  Dinner is ready:

It was a delicious and fun dinner, made even more fun with some Chianti imported from Tuscany, Winter Pear wine from Heritage Wine Cellars in North East, PA, and Nebbiolo ice wine from Breaux Vineyards in Purcellville, VA, which BG picked up the previous week when he was in the DC area.  Dessert was supposed to be pistachio baklava from the Pittsburgh Public Market and my freezer-full of Jeni's ice cream, but we were so full that only BG partook in my last pint of Buttercup Pumpkin and Amaretti Cookies ice cream.  I did eat the baklava the next day though, and it was oh so yummy!  Thanks again for a great meal!

Aarti Sequeira Cooking Demo at the Giant Eagle Market District

My weekend started out with a bang at the Giant Eagle Market District at Robinson.  Fellow foodie friend FoodBurgh Mike invited me to a blogger event (thanks, Mike!) featuring Aarti Sequeira who was the Season 6 winner of The Next Food Network Star and host of Aarti Party on the Food Network.  The "VIP breakfast" featured two of Aarti's recipes, the Pumpkin Oatmeal and Indian Omelet.  Both were yummy!

Because my body is egg yolk-unfriendly, the fabulous chef at Market District went waaaaay out of her way to make a special omelet for me with egg whites.  That was so nice of them, and it looks ridiculously good to boot!  I'd like to give Market District a special shout-out for their amazing hospitality!

After a brief chat with Aarti herself and some photo ops, we went to see her cooking demo.  In honor of St Paddy's Day, she made the Hair of the Dog Hash: Corned Beef Has with Ginger, Garam Masala and Whiskey, which is like an Indian-Irish marriage - well, Aarti is married to an Irishman after all - and a more traditional Indian dish, Aloo Gobi.  Aarti infuses her demo with not only helpful tips (such as how Indian spices should be purchased whole, heated to get the flavor out, then ground) but also fun stories about her show and from her days on The Next Food Network Star.  I can't say that I was familiar with Aarti before I went to this event - not because I'm anti-Food Network or anything; I just don't watch much TV in general - but she really sold me on her bubbly, personable, and down-to-earth personality.  Her recipes are also creative - in addition to traditional Indian dishes, she is known for putting an Indian spin on American meals.  I have already scoured her recipes online and hope to try a few soon...well, just as soon as I figure out where to find some of the traditional Indian ingredients!

Aarti's expressive personality shines through during the cooking demo.  We each got a bite of the two dishes she made and both were AMAZING.

Thank YOU so much for coming!
