Verde Mexican Kitchen & Cantina: Take Two (Bloomfield/Garfield)

A friend decided to celebrate her birthday at Verde a couple months ago.  Truth be told, she had originally picked a different restaurant, but when said other restaurant refused to accept a reservation for our large group on a Saturday night, my friend turned to the much more accommodating Verde instead.  My first visit to Verde during the Summer 2012 edition of Pittsburgh Restaurant Week had been a positive experience, and I was really looking forward to a return trip.

Although I really liked what I had last time, I wanted to try something different this time.  I chose the Carne Asada, which are slices of tender and juicy grilled tequila-marinated steak, served with chimichurri sauce, crispy onion, and chile-roasted sweet potatoes (hidden underneath).

Verde's cocktail selections also continue to delight.  I imbibed in some Scarecrow (dark rum, pumpkin, cream, fall spices) and Forbidden Root (reposado, ginger, apple cider, lime), and both were excellent.

This second visit to Verde all but solidified my positive opinion of the restaurant!

Verde Mexican Restaurant & Cantina (Bloomfield/Garfield)

My trip to Toronto unfortunately coincided with the Summer 2012 edition of Pittsburgh Restaurant Week, but I did manage to return in time for one Restaurant Week outing with some friends.  I picked Verde, because I hadn't been and really wanted to try it, and because its Restaurant Week menu looked so good!

We started with an order of amazingly fresh Guacamole to share, courtesy of one of my dining buddies.

For my three-course meal, I started with a refreshing Ensalata Verde.  From the menu: Arcadia greens, nopales (which is like a cactus plant), chayote (a type of squash), roasted beets, yucca chips, and cactus cilantro vinaigrette.

I then proceeded with the Pollo en Mole Poblano as my main - a juicy half chicken chargrilled to the point of perfect crispiness on the skin, served with housemade mole sauce, scallions, and a side of yucca fries.

For my dessert, I chose the Tres Leches Pudín de Pan - a tasty bread pudding with rum sauce.

Add to that some delicious, delicious margaritas - ah, perfect meal!

Everyone at the table seemed quite satisfied with their meal, and the service was absolutely fabulous.  As an aside, during reservation I had made a special request for a table with good lighting (for photo-snapping purposes, of course!), and even though we were a fairly a large group, Verde was able to accommodate us without any problems.  It was too bad that I had to miss much of Restaurant Week this summer, but I'm really glad that the one meal I had during this week turned out so great!

Casa Rasta (Beechview)

I have a confession to make: I never used to care too much for tacos.  It's not that I disliked them.  It"s just one of those things I never would crave.

Well, that was until I met taco-loving friends, and awesome taco places like Smoke BBQ Taqueria started popping up in Pittsburgh.

Recently, Burgh Gourmand wrote a raving review of Casa Rasta in Beechview (near Dormont) which made me unusually hungry for tacos.  Yesterday, we (along with Señorita Cibulka) had made plans to go shopping in the Strip District and then back to my digs for a home-cooked meal a la Chef BG (more on this in my next post), but a little detour down to Beechview for some tacos was too tempting to pass up.

To be honest with you, I had no idea that Beechview existed before this.  If you didn't either, Beechview is just a stone's throw from Dormont.

Casa Rasta took over a small space just two months ago that used to house a pizza shop.  The owners, Laura and Antonio, are super down-to-earth and all-round awesome.  You gotta love their genuine passion for their food.

We started with their weekend special, Ceviche Tostada.

At Laura's suggestion, I added some Valentino sauce to the Ceviche Tostada, which was a wonderful idea.  The ceviche was fresh, clean, and flavorful - it is by far the best $3 ceviche you can get, anywhere.  (I think it's worth way more.)  The tostada is crispy and just perfectly sturdy for the ceviche.  No sogginess, no breaking apart randomly.  I didn't think there could be so much science to the perfect tostada, but it is true.

I also got two tacos, the Steak Taco and the Pulled Pork Taco.  Both consisted of chunks of well-seasoned meat on top of two soft corn tortillas that I believe were baked.  The tacos were divine on their own, but I also added a bit of salsa which made the tacos even more amazing.  And the tortillas had just the perfect consistency.  I never used to care for tortillas (which is probably the reason why I never cared for tacos), but if places like Smoke and Reyna in the Strip District changed my feelings about tortillas in recent months, Casa Rasta absolutely cemented it.

For beverages, several varieties of Jarritos Soda are available.  I tried the pineapple one which I liked.

The shop wasn't busy when we were there, and Laura and Antonio were so kind to offer us samples of items, all of which were great.  First we got some quesadilla bites with cheese and a Mexican herb called "epazote" that I had never heard of before.  It was very interesting.

Then, two sweet items:  Chocolate Truffles with Ancho Chili and Blueberry Goat Cheese.  Can you say YUM?!?

All in all, I loved Casa Rasta.  Delicious food prepared lovingly by a friendly, down-home couple - that's what Pittsburgh's all about!

I started this post with a confession that I never used to care for tacos.  Needless to say, I am now a convert.

SMOKE Barbeque Taqueria (Homestead)

If I had to choose just one word to describe Smoke Babeque Taqueria, that word would be "divine."

So far, I have only been to Smoke twice, but I've been more than impressed both times.  Especially for someone who doesn't normally get terribly excited about tacos.  My first visit was prompted by a conversation with fellow food blogger friend Señorita Cibulka, who invited the ultimate Smoke fanboy, Burgh Gourmand, along.  The little hole-in-the-wall establishment with just three tables made such an impression on me that when, two weeks later, another food blogger friend, Suburghia Foodie, mentioned she was going to be in the area, I suggested Smoke as the place to grab a bite together.

On my first visit, BG recommended the Pork Taco and the Brisket Taco, and I went along.  Because the dude is a cook, after all.  And I think it is generally a smart idea to trust a cook's judgment, at least when it comes to food.

And that was definitely a smart move.

On my second visit, I wanted to try two other varieties, the Chicken Taco and the Veggie Taco.

Avocado Cream, Pickled Onions, Fresno Hot Sauce ($3.50)

Veggie Taco at Smoke BBQ Tacqueria
Veggie Taco
Black Beans, Roasted Poblano & Corn Relish, Crispy Potatoes, Chili de Arbol Sauce ($3.00)
(N.B.: The sauce is really spicy!)

Each of these tacos was unique and flavorful.  The owners, Jeff Petruso and Nancy Carranco, who recently moved from Austin, Texas, make everything themselves - the meat, the tortillas, the drinks. Everything.

And ooooh, the tortillas.  So soft, with a hint of sweetness.  Handmade daily.  Just perfect.  Best tortillas I've ever had.

For now, there are only five taco options, which means I have just the Ribs Taco left to try.  That said, Smoke is planning to expand their menu, a fact that excites me.

During each of my visits, I also ordered a side and a drink.  The first side I tried was the Jalapeno Apple Slaw, which was like coleslaw, only far, FAR better.  And don't you just love how the sides are served in mugs?

The second side I tried was the Mac n Cheese, topped with the optional housemade bacon.  This was also a BG-recommendation.  I used to think I hated mac and cheese, because when I think mac and cheese, I think Kraft Dinner.  But again, a smart gal listens to the one who knows a thing or two about cooking.  Sure enough, I was blown away.  Smoke's is seriously the best mac and cheese I've ever had in my life.  And the housemade bacon?  Divine.  If you get the Smoke Mac n Cheese, you must get it with bacon.  Must.

For the fresh housemade drinks, both times I went with something I had never tried before.  The Horchata is a slightly sweet rice drink with cinnamon, and I liked it.

The second time I got the Agua Fresca, which is a refreshing fruit drink.  The flavor of the day was honeydew, and I was pleased with it.

Austin's loss = Pittsburgh's gain.

Needless to say, I will be back.  This place is worth the drive to Homestead.

Franklin Inn Mexican Restaurant (Pittsburgh): Take Two

One of my favorite pasttimes is trying new restaurants.  Many of these restaurants I end up liking a lot and vowing to return, but with 124 restaurants currently on my wish list, 86 of which are in the Pittsburgh area, it often takes me a little while to go back to a restaurant I had been to and enjoyed, despite the best of intentions.  (*blush*)  Franklin Inn is one restaurant in this category.

Franklin Inn holds a special place in my heart as it was the restaurant featured in my inaugural post on this blog back on February 28. It had been on the back of my mind as a place I needed to revisit, and I finally had the chance a couple of weeks ago when a friend and I decided to meet up for dinner and the North Hills area was a convenient location for both of us.

Announcing to the public that you're about to visit a restaurant means people will chime in about that restaurant.  Danina from Bite Bistro recommended the Chorizo Burrito at Franklin Inn, so I figured I couldn't go wrong with that!  The chorizo inside this burrito is a special blend made for Franklin Inn, and it came with tomatoes, onions, and cheese.  For the sides I opted for a side salad and the black beans and corn.  I had heard some complaints about the chorizo burrito being too cheesy, but mine was perfectly fine.  Everything tasted great.

And then, because I couldn't resist (as usual), I got a dessert.  I was oscillating between the Fried Ice Cream and the Caramel Flan (made from a special family recipe), and ended up choosing the Fried Ice Cream with chocolate sauce.  I was quite pleasantly surprised by this.  The ice cream had the flavor of natural vanilla beans and the crust wasn't thick and hard like some other fried ice cream I've had in the past.

It was another enjoyable meal at Franklin Inn.  I'll be back again. :)

El Paso Mexican Grill (Bridgeville)

Last Friday night I met up with a friend for a quick dinner before a movie at one of her regular hangouts, El Paso Mexican Grill in Bridgeville.  Located in the Great Southern strip mall next to TJ Maxx, El Paso strikes me as the type of place that would be great for a really simple, casual meal with your family. Traffic was surprisingly good that day so I got there about 20 minutes early.  There was a couple waiting for a booth seat when I got there (those seem to be pretty popular) but I had no preference, so I was seated at one of the tables right away and started munching on warm tortilla chips and salsa while I waited for my friend to arrive.

My friend is pretty familiar with the restaurant and ordered one of her stand-by chicken dishes.  I went with the Honey Chipotle Shrimp served with rice and beans which I thought sounded pretty good.  My friend had promised that El Paso would be cheap and decent - and she was right.  My shrimp dish was $10.05 and really filled me up.  It was pretty tasty, too, for a $10 seafood item.  The shrimp was just a tad bit on the overcooked side, but the sauce had a nice amount of sweetness and smokiness and was quite good.  It's no fine-dining, mind you, so if you go to El Paso expecting knock-off-your-socks Mexican food, you'll probably be disappointed.  But for something quick and relatively inexpensive, this was a good option.

Franklin Inn Mexican Restaurant (Pittsburgh)

I hit up Franklin Inn this past weekend as everyone who's been there has said good things about it.  I had wanted to check the place out even before they randomly sent me a "free entrée" coupon in the mail.  Score!!

Chicken Enchiladas with Poblano Molé
My free entrée (regularly $10.95) was deeeelicious!  The only gripe I have is that they gave me refried beans instead of the black beans and corn salad I had requested.  Refried beans are not the prettiest food to photograph, so it kinda ruined my picture. :(  Oh, and sorry about the lighting.  I really needed to work on that white balance.

Mango Flavored Mason Jar Margarita
They are apparently famous for this.  My waiter recommended either the traditional margarita or the mango, and I went for the mango.  It was really quite good.  This is the half order (16 oz.) for $8.41.
